Hi you people out there, I'm Qiren from 4-9, Catholic High School. English is the subject i love most, especially when you have such a wonderful English teacher, Ms Lucy Fernandez, coaching you. Recently, we're supposed to read this book "1984". Don't be fooled by it's dull cover, as the story inside is so intriguing and inspiring that i have decided to set up this blog to introduce this wonder book to the world, although most already know about it.
This story by George Orwell revolves mainly around politics and totalitarianism, which only the totalitarian regimes in Germany and Russia.
The story has two main characters, namely Winston and Julia.
Winston is the protagonist, as well as the main character in 1984. He works in the Records department at the Ministry, Smith spends his days constantly rewriting and altering history to satisfy the government (which includes destroying all evidence of history not conducive to the government's agenda). He is constantly questioning reality as he knows it, and in his mind secretly abhors Big Brother and the Party.
Julia is a fellow Ministry worker. She knows that Winston hates the Party, just like her, and they soon fall in love with each other, meeting secretly as often as they can, talking about everything there is under the sun.
This novel is set in the year 1984, in London, or rather 'Airstrip One', in Oceania. Oceania is a superpower controlled by the 'Party', which is led by Big Brother. Oceania's hierarchy is divided into the Inner Party, much like the upper-class of today's society, the Outer Party, similar to the middle class, and lastly, a group known as the 'proles', which are the lower class. member of the Inner Party.
Winston and Julia were truly in love with each other, and both hated the Party. They met O'Brien, believed to be associated with a conspiracy against the Party, part of a secret society known only as the Brotherhood. He and Julia immediately join, and promise to do whatever they can to help the Brotherhood. However, it turned out that O'Brien was actually a member of the Party and had tricked them, and both Winston and Julia were caught and interrogated, ultimately betraying each other during the interrogation. It must have been heart-wrenching to betray the one you love, and it certainly has stirred up emotions in me. I was touched by their love for each other, and also felt the sorrow when both of them betrayed each other.
This novel is definitely a must-read. It is captivating, inspiring and intriguing. I would recommend those who have not read it to do so as soon as possible, as it would definitely be worth the time. Those who have already read it, good for you, and feel free to post your views and comments about the story by clicking the "comments" button below
